Believe it or not, there is life outside of Slippery Rock's own Ginger Hill. Come on people: let's expand our horizons a little bit and venture to those not-so-far-away places like Cranberry, Butler, Sharon, Mercer or Grove City.

I know this might be a little frightening for some, but nightlife and dining opportunities do exist outside the confines of Main Street.

For future reference, during my dining experiences a guest will usually accompany me so I can sample many different entrees and beverages without having to look like a complete glutton by ordering many for myself.

When evaluating a restaurant, I will stick to five basic categories: food and beverage, price, environment, service and the bottom line recommendation.

I will begin our fine cuisine trip out of the Rock by visiting Hereford and Hops in the neighboring area of Cranberry, Pa.

Hereford and Hops is one of three restaurants in a nationwide chain. Being a "Steakhouse and Brewpub," I deducted that it is known for its steak and beer.

However, you can also choose from their well-equipped menu of different appetizers, pub wraps, burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, pastas and seafood entrees. Not a fan of beer? No worries, as H & H has a full bar and wine list.

FOOD & BEVERAGE

H & H truly lived up to its steakhouse name. The filet mignon melted in my mouth and I didn't even have to use a steak knife to cut it. The Cheddar Ale and French Onion soups left me wishing I got a bowl instead of a cup because both were absolutely delicious. But beware, taste before salting, as both were sufficiently salted when served.

The Italian sausage pasta I ordered came in a large portion and was definitely worth reheating for seconds. For the best drink selections, make sure you ask your server to describe the different draft selections so you can find one that fits your taste.

PRICES

Prices are comparable to larger chain restaurants such as Chili's or Applebee's and most choice-cut steaks (sirloin, ribeye, New York strip, T-bone and filet) can be purchased for $22.95.

Monday is definitely the night to stop in and try a steak, as the special includes a steak of your choice, potato or salad bar and a 22-ounce draft for $15.95.

Though a bit pricey, they are definitely in line with the portion size and service you receive.

ENVIRONMENT

The restaurant includes of many different rooms. Try the "Library" room for an at-home, relaxed atmosphere as you sit in comfy chairs or even a love seat.

The "Pub" consists of a large bar and also many tables and booths for dining. Sports and entertainment were all around on the large flat screen TVs, yet were not overwhelming.

Other dimly lit rooms provide a romantic date atmosphere. They also have a large grill area that allows you to choose and grill your own steak. There is also outside dining available. With the number of areas, there is plenty of room for large parties.

SERVICE

Phenomenal! The servers and managers all work together to make sure the courses are served quickly, but not too quickly that they overlap. Employees paid special attention to customers' wants and needs, so much so that I would go as far as saying it is the best service by a waiter that I have ever had.

In the military? Make sure you stop in with your military ID and receive your free steak dinner once a year.
