"By staying involved in the military, I am not only serving my country, but serving the community as well," Saraka said. "Being involved makes one more visible in the community."
One of the biggest pieces of advice Saraka said that he could give to anyone just beginning their military career is to challenge themselves.
"Don't be afraid to fail because you learn from your mistakes," Saraka said. "You never get anywhere without sticking your neck out."
Though continuing to help his country through the military, Saraka remained humble about his military service, mentioning there are "a lot of very brave men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan who are certainly more deserving of praise and recognition."
Yet re-enlisting in the National Guard wasn't enough for Saraka.
Another way Saraka continues to retain his connection with the military is by supporting the construction of the Fallen Heroes memorial, currently located in the Russell Wright Alumni House.
He said the new memorial will contain a special section for veterans of war.
Though originally from New Jersey, Saraka currently lives in New Castle with his wife Maureen, his 5-year-old daughter Madeline and an English springer spaniel.
