Perhaps more important than the match results was the fact that SRU got its first look at how its young freshmen would handle themselves against outside competition.
"We learned that we can beat the teams that we should beat and that we need to work hard and learn to finish against the stronger teams", Lokash said. "We can't let mistakes snowball into more mistakes because that costs points."
Bixler had 145 assists and 43 digs while Spangler added 53 digs. Blasko led the way with 57 kills and Urbanik served up 15 aces during the weekend long competition.
One thing Coach Lokash will not have to worry about is how her team fares academically as The Rock was one of 30 Division II schools to be given the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award.
The award is given to college and high school teams with an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale. The team finished with a GPA of 3.59 for the entire year, both fall and spring semesters and including players that quit or were added to the team after the start of the season. This is the second straight season that SRU has earned this distinction.
"I'm extremely proud, we tell the recruits that an education is the main reason they are here," Lokash said. "Volleyball ranks third behind their family and academics."
SRU will next see action at the California University of Pennsylvania Tournament Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. The Rock will face West Liberty State and Gannon on Friday, and Northern Kentucky and West Virginia State on Saturday.
