"We have really good chemistry and we all improve each other," Handy said.
Meredith understands that all teams have a weakness, and for his team, it is fitness, he said. He pointed to the fact that his team needs to work harder on getting into shape.
"If we get into shape like we need to be, we will be a force in winning matches," Meredith said.
Meredith also wants his team to perform better in its doubles matches this fall. He said that the recruiting really helped the team's ability to do that this year. With additions to the team such as Samantha Blackburn, Kayla Blackburn's younger sister, and Chelsea Gibson, doubles have the potential to get stronger.
Meredith said that when they win doubles at the beginning, singles become a little easier.
"The key to success is to smoke people in doubles, and that sets the stage for singles," Meredith said.
Their first competition, the Slippery Rock Invitational, is set for Sept. 8., and will give the team a chance to see where it stands.
"This is the closest thing to a scrimmage to see where we are," Meredith said.
The Rock will be playing their home matches on the newley resurfaced tennis courts located just off Kiester Road. The resurfacing was thanks to a $5,000 grant SRU received from the United States Tennis Association (USTA) as part of its 2007 Public Facility Funding Grants in conjunction with the Tennis in the Parks Initiative.
