Rock track star obtains conference's top winter honor
Senior track athlete Andi Rose was named this week as a recipient of a prestigious Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Winter Top Ten Award.
The Top Ten Awards, selected by the PSAC's sports information directors, recognize student-athletes who distinguish themselves in the classroom and in the arena of competition.
Rose, who has participated in hurdling and sprinting events, is a native of Wheeling, W. Va. and went to Wheeling Park High School. She is a four-time All-America award winner and maintains a 3.35 quality point average in the classroom as a health and physical education major.
In addition to her All-American honors, Rose has been named as a PSAC indoor track and field Athlete of the Year each of the last seasons after she received both the overall and track-event MVP awards at both the 2006 and 2007 PSAC Indoor Championship meets.
Rose won the 55-meter hurdles individual championship at this year's PSAC event with a meet-record time of 8.15 seconds. She also placed second behind teammate Vera McDaniel in both the 55-meter dash and 200-meter dash events.
Her efforts led SRU to its first ever, women's or men's, PSAC Indoor team title.
Following the conference meet, Rose tallied the fourth All-American citation of her career with a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles event at the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships in Boston.
The award was the third No. 3 finish of her collegiate career with the Rock.
Rose is the 19th Rock student-athlete to receive a PSAC Top Ten Award since the award was given out in the 1994-95 season and the second during the current 2006-07 academic year.
Football offensive lineman Mike Butterworth was honored last fall.
SRU has had at least one student-athlete named to the PSAC Top Ten honors in 12 of the 13 academic years in which the award has been presented.
Green & White game showcases defense
The Rock football team held its annual Green & White game at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium last Friday evening, with the Green team, the first team offense and defense, coming away with 16-7 victory.
The Green was led by junior quarterback Nate Crookshank. Crookshank went 13-for-19 for 143 passing yards and one interception.
Junior wide receiver Paul Favers led all Green receivers with four catches for 50 yards.
Junior H-back Colin Golden caught five passes for 44 yards while sophomore wideout Terry Grossetti hauled in two passes for 40 yards.
Junior tailback Corey Manfull made his return on the field after a hand injury that kept him out for the whole 2006 season with 50 yards on seven carries.
Backing up Manfull was sophomore running back Travis Sarver, who rushed for 24 yards on eight carries for the Green.
Sophomore defensive end led the Green defense with three solo tackles and two sacks, one of which gave the winning team a safety.
Junior middle linebacker also recorded two tackles while freshman outside linebacker sealed the victory when he returned a late interception for 31-yard touchdown return.
The Green & White game concluded the 14 practices the Rock had in the spring.
The Rock will open the 2007 season on Aug. 30 when they play host to Division-II Seton Hill at Thompson Stadium. Four of the Rock's five games to start the '07 season will be at home.
