It's not often that a collegiate team can earn a regional playoff berth, while at the same time, fail to reach its own division's playoff.

But that is exactly what the SRU women's softball team currently faces.

The Rock holds a 26-22 overall record, the highest win total for a women's softball team all-time at SRU.

A more dubious distinction, however, is the 8-12 record the team holds in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division.

Facing elimination, the Rock dropped its fourth consecutive game in the second half of a doubleheader to the Lock Haven Bald Eagles, 14-2. The Rock was outscored 34-9 during its four-game skid.

The Rock also lost the first game of its twinbill to Lock Haven by a score of 7-1. The series capped off the Rock's first four-game losing streak of the season, and subsequently, shattered the team's hope for a PSAC playoff bid in 2007.

In game two, Bald Eagles senior Stephanie Kinch allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out three Rock batters in the Lock Haven victory. The Rock didn't pick up its first run until the fourth inning.

Kinch's mound opponent, Rock senior Courtney Conron, was knocked around by the Bald Eagles, allowing 14 runs, 11 of which were earned, spraying out 15 hits over five innings of work.

"Going up against Lock Haven, I wasn't really sure what to expect," Conron said. "I thought they would come out swinging. Really, I was just out there to have fun for my last time. Personally, it wasn't about winning or losing. It was about being with my teammates."

Game one saw a theme that has repeatedly plagued the Rock throughout the season: the inability to put runs on the board when facing PSAC opponents. The Rock has been outscored 117-89 by PSAC oppositions this season. With the losses, the Rock also finished 0-4 against Lock Haven for the season, being outscored 38-6 during the four games.

Lock Haven ace Kristin Erb held the Rock to one run on six hits. She struck out five Rock batters in the game. Erb was named Division II Athlete of the Year last season.
