Slippery Rock University equestrian team qualified for Regionals on April 1, 2007, at Green Tree Stables in Edinboro.
The club team had three riders qualify.
Freshman Amy Watt had her first appearance, scoring fifth overall in the division. April Schroder, junior, also had her first appearance. The captain of the team, senior Amanda Stoops, had her second appearance at Regionals, placing fourth overall in the division.
Slippery Rock University Equestrian team finished with an all-time high of fifth out of 17 schools in the region. SRU was one of the smallest schools competing in regionals.
Seton Hill, Bethany, West Virginia University and the University of Pittsburgh were the only schools ahead of the Rock.
"If I had to sum up the season in one word, it would be 'success,'" Stoops said. "This has probably been the most successful season we have ever had."
Stoops has had quite an exciting career on the equestrian team. Last year, she was champion at regionals in Erie. She was also reserve champion at Zones in Delaware and at the Intercollegiate Nationals in Harrisburg, where she came in fifth in the division.
She beat out riders from huge schools, such as Ohio State, Texas A&M, UCLA and the University of Kentucky.
Stoops, majoring in marketing and communication, chose Slippery Rock University because they offer equestrian at the club level.
She has been on the team for four years, serving as captain during two of those years.
Stoops, a Clarion native, said she remembers being interested in the sport of equestrian as soon as she could walk.
"I have always loved horses and this sport since I was a little kid," Stoops said.
The equestrian season typically consists of five to seven riding/showing events in the fall and three to four events in the spring against teams in the region. The riders with the best showings in each event and the rider with the highest point accumulation will be eligible to go to regionals. Stoops placed in every show and accumulated 38 points for the season, also qualifying for regional competition.
The equestrian team will also be having an exciting change next year as it will move into its new facility on campus, the Storm Harbor Equestrian Center.
"The move to Storm Harbor is going to be awesome," Stoops said. "It's kind of disappointing, I won't be here for this change, but this is something we have been working on for a few years. There are huge schools, like Pitt, that are actually really jealous of this new place."
