The SRU women's water polo team placed fourth in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division Tournament held at the University of Michigan this weekend, finishing its season with a 7-15 record.
During the first round on Saturday, SRU defeated Mercyhurst by the score of 9-7.
The Rock was losing 4-2 and then 7-4 by the end of the first two periods, but the Rock rallied back, scoring three goals in the third period and two in the final period to win the first round.
Junior driver Beth Choike scored three goals in the victory while senior offensive set Erika Brunner had one goal.
Two goals were scored by junior offensive set Ashley Goodwill. Junior defensive set Sarah Sander had two goals.
Sophomore Betsy Wilson also had a goal against Mercyhurst.
Sophomore goaltender Lauren Surbaugh recorded 10 saves in the first-round victory.
In the next round and later in the day, the higher-seeded Michigan took care of the Rock 21-5 in a blowout.
Choike tallied one goal as Brunner was the main offensive threat in the game with three goals against Michigan.
Goodwill rounded out the scoring with one goal in the loss. Surbaugh was in net again for the Rock and was credited with 11 saves.
The Rock lost 5-2 to Gannon in the third place game of the CWPA Western Division Championships on Sunday.
Sander, who also caused three kickouts, scored one of the goals.
Sophomore driver Heather Walbright was credited with the other goal.
Brunner and Choike were both held scoreless in the defensive affair and had caused a kickout and an assist each.
Surbaugh made 11 saves and recorded two steals in the loss.
"I think we had a very successful season," Jim Yeamans said. "There was a difficult schedule, we started out slow, but throughout the season, these girls have really improved."
The CWPA Western Division Championships and the fourth-place finish conclude SRU's season and the water polo careers of Brunner and fellow senior Megan Jo Ramage.
Yeamans said that he is hoping that his team has gotten a lot of experience this season and that next year the younger players on the team can step up and make an impact on the squad.
"The younger athletes really stepped up, which they will need to do with Erika Brunner graduating," Yeamans said. "Hopefully we will also have some recruits and see some fresh faces. It's always fun to get out there and compete, and it will be great bettering our team, improving, and finishing higher at next year's championships."
