Students should take notice of profs' concerns
Issue date: 4/27/07 Section: Rocket Letters
To the editor:
Like many other students in the past few weeks, I'd been running across APSCUF flyers on the way to class and wondering what was going on. Until two weeks ago, I didn't even know what APSCUF was and I'd only heard rumors of a strike here and there. So I wrote down the address for the Slippery Rock APSCUF web site and decided to do some of my own research.
I found out more in those 10 minutes about APSCUF than I had learned upon being at the university for two years. I feel like there is a lack of communication about this subject on campus and this is an issue that affects every student. A lot of my friends hadn't heard about the strike either and they were just as shocked as I was. If you aren't one to pick up a newspaper, or read flyers in the buildings, then it's hard to become aware of certain issues.
I knew that almost every college student uses Facebook, so I created a group on Facebook called "Support the Slippery Rock APSCUF," in hopes to spread some information about APSCUF and what they are fighting for. A lot of the information in the group is based on what I found on the Slippery Rock APSCUF Web site. I also e-mailed several professors with questions I had concerning the rumors I had heard. They were more than happy to help, and set a lot of things straight for me.
I'd just like to say that I fully support the professors and I believe that the grounds for the strike are justifiable, even though I do not want to see a strike happen. I also hope that if enough students show interest in the issue, the university and state will see that the students are concerned. This will hopefully speed things up so that come June 30, our professors will have a new contract.
