On Saturday, the Rock also split a doubleheader with IUP, falling 1-0 in game one and coming up with a five-run seventh inning in game two to win 9-6.
Senior righty Derek Blyzwick went the distance for the Rock in game one, allowing just five hits and one run-unearned-while striking out nine. He said that while his performance was good, IUP starting pitcher Chris Twigg's (seven innings pitched, one hit, no runs) was better.
"It's frustrating to lose like that, but it's not like our hitters aren't trying," Blyzwick said. "You have to take your hat off to (Twigg). He pitched excellent and kept our hitters off-balance the whole game."
In Saturday's game two, the team's seventh-inning surge was keyed by run-scoring hits by Hudeck, redshirt sophomore Scott Bender and senior M.J. Parsons. Parsons said that many players on the team, himself included, looked at Saturday's win as perhaps the start of something special.
"Everyone seems to think that game might be a turning point for us," Parsons said. "Hopefully we can build upon that the rest of the season, because we know we're capable of doing what we did in that last inning of the second game."
After the four games against IUP, the Rock traveled to Wheeling Jesuit on Thursday and earned the split against the non-conference opponent.
SRU took game one by a 10-1 score, and the dropped game two by a 5-2 margin.
In game one, Parsons collected three hits and three RBIs while both Adams and Hudeck each tallied a pair of hits.
The winning pitcher for the Rock in game one was redshirt freshman Sean Holliday.
Holliday allowed one earned run on four hits, while striking out two and walking one in five innings.
In game two, Parsons garnered the only RBIs for the Rock with a two-run double.
Thanks to a series of postponements in the week, the team is currently in the middle of a brutal five-day, 10-game stretch, set to wrap up on Sunday with a doubleheader at Mansfield University.
Messer said the backed-up schedule and unremarkable starting pitching performances have made it difficult for his team to get into a groove.
"We haven't done a real good job with our starting pitching, because any time you're making changes in the third or fourth innings, it gives your opponent a confidence boost because they know they're already getting into your bullpen," Messer said.
"We know everybody's in the same boat with rainouts, and we have a bunch of games in the next few days, but we're actually looking forward to them because we haven't even been able to get on our own field. This spring seems like it's been a little worse than normal."
The Rock goes on the road to take on PSAC-West bottom-feeder Clarion (8-20 overall, 2-10 PSAC West) in a doubleheader today scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
