The SRU women's tennis team clinched a berth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs Wednesday with a 9-0 win over Shippensburg.
The win moved the Rock's PSAC West record to 3-1 to assure the Rock of making the four team playoffs held April 20 and 21 at Bloomsburg University.
"We are really excited and we are ready for the playoffs to start," freshman Laura Handy said.
The Rock is scheduled to take on PSAC East winner Bloomsburg as SRU is the number two team in PSAC West. The Rock lost earlier in the year to Bloomsburg by the score of 7-2.
Sophomore Kayla Blackburn wants to pay back Bloomsburg with a victory over them now.
"We are a much stronger team than what we were in the fall, and I know that we can pull through in this one," Blackburn said.
The Rock rolled over Shippensburg, losing only eight sets throughout the match.
Freshman Jessica Hilborn led the Rock to victory with a "double bagel" 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Shippensburg's Kathryn Hoover. In doubles, Hilborn, and her partner senior Ashley Greene, routed Shippensburg's doubles team of Hoover and Kristen Herman.
Blackburn continued her winning ways as she won her singles match over Melinda DeWald 6-0, 6-2.
Blackburn and doubles partner Handy easily defeated Shippensburg's number one team of DeWald and Nicole Perugni by the score of 8-0.
Handy won her singles match over Perugni by the score of 6-1, 6-0.
Sophomore Lara Rizzi and sophomore Christina Rhodes finished off the number three pairing of Kathy Henley and Stephanie Belanger by the tally of 8-1.
Rizzi and Rhodes both won their singles matches 8-1 to finish off Shippensburg nine matches to none.
Handy attributes their winning ways to their rising confidence.
"Our confidence is why we are winning against our rivals in the PSAC," Handy said.
The Rock cruised to another PSAC West win over Clarion on Tuesday, 8-1.
The only loss came in the number two doubles match with Greene and Hilborn losing to Clarion's Lisa Baumgartner and Amy Robertson 8-6. But Greene and Hilborn both won their singles matches to make up for the loss.
