Female teams, athletes honored by NOW
The Women's Sports Foundation announced Monday it will honor three SRU women's athletic teams, 12 individual female student-athletes and one Rock head coach for their role in helping SRU attain gender equity in its athletic program.
The group of Rock women will receive the Foundation's second "Geena Takes Aim" national resolution during a ceremony this past Tuesday at Luigi's Restaurant in Slippery Rock.
Joanne Tosti-Vasey, president of PA NOW (National Organization of Women) Inc., will present plaques bearing the resolution to the SRU women's field hockey, swimming and water polo teams.
Individual plaques bearing the resolution also were presented to SRU student-athletes Rachael Bienias, Emily Campbell, Beth Choike, Alison Nuckols, Elizabeth Penning, Sarah Sander, Laura Sanford, Ashley Stoner, Jessica Student, Jennifer Venet, Heather Walbright and Rebecca Zinn and Rock head swimming/water polo coach Jim Yeamans.
The "Geena Takes Aim" resolution is named for former Foundation trustee, women's rights advocate and award-winning actress Geena Davis and honors individuals and/or groups who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment in pursuit of gender equality.
Shaffer promoted to Assistant AD position
Rock athletic director Paul Lueken announced Wednesday that former athletic department administrative assistant Pearl Shaffer has been promoted to the position of assistant to the athletic director/senior woman administrator and business manager.
