Construction starts parking problem
Issue date: 4/13/07 Section: Rocket Letters
To the editor:
As current Rock Apartment residents, we feel that attention must be brought to our abysmal parking situation. The Rock Apartments used to hold many appeals to SRU students: exclusivity, freedom and plentiful parking close to the buildings. We understand completely the necessity of updated housing for the growing campus, and we applaud the university's efforts in creating a more attractive on-campus housing option to keep students from moving off campus. In doing so, however, they have removed many of the perks of the apartment complex and created problems.
For those of us who signed leases prior to the 2005-2006 year, we were not notified of the upcoming construction or how it would affect our experience in the Rock Apartments. We were not informed of the removal of one parking cul-de-sac next to building 310 for the construction trailers and parking. We were not told that we would be sharing the lot behind 310 with construction workers last spring or with the students from the new suites this year. And we returned from our Easter holiday this year to discover that our already inadequate parking situation had been further diminished, with no prior notification from the university. The student parking lot next to the stadium, where a majority of our residents and those living in the new suites have been parking all year, now sits behind a construction fence. In making Slippery Rock more appealing for future students, the current students and their needs seem to have been lost in the shuffle. What does the university expect will happen during student move-out at the end of the semester? If the space is currently inadequate, how can we be expected to accommodate the extra vehicles during finals week, when parents arrive to assist with moving out?
