By doing away with bar codes, students will not have to worry about having their card not scanned because of damage. Now students can simply wave their card in front of a card reader on a vending machine if they want to get a snack quickly.

While it may seem complicated and confusing, an RFID system is rather simple to understand. An RFID system consists of two parts: a tag made up of a microchip with an antenna, and a reader with an antenna.

The reader will send out an electromagnetic wave that is picked up by the small microchip inside of the RFID card. The chip modulates the waves and is converted into digital data, allowing someone to purchase candy without any scanning.

A card reader's range can stretch as far as 350 feet, although the ones that will be used at SRU will be much shorter, Smith said.

"We want our students and our university to always be on the cutting edge of technology," Smith said. "By implementing the RFID cards, we are ahead of everyone else."

RFID cards are just the latest in a growing trend of new gadgets that combine innovative technology with creative design. The line of people and companies waiting for such technology continues to expand, and standing at the front is SRU.
