RFID tags to substitute all IDs in fall

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) cards will replace the university's current ID cards used by all students, faculty and staff beginning in the fall, SRU President Robert Smith announced Thursday during the State of the University Address. SRU is the first institution in North America to use these RFID cards.

Out with the old and in with the new. That seems to be the growing trend these days-get rid of old technology for newer and "better" technology. Slippery Rock University announced Tuesday that it is doing away with the current out-of-date ID cards that all students, faculty and staff carry, and replacing them with state-of-the-art RFID cards.

Borough Police April 12 - Yahru I. Wilkerson, 20, was cited for disorderly house. Campus Police March 31 - Thomas S. Launer, 19, was cited for underage consumption of alcohol after a report of an alcohol violation in Rhoads Hall. April 1 - Police are continuing to investigate a report of criminal mischief to a laptop computer in Bard Hall.

SRU spends $1M in lawsuit

Twelve SRU female student-athletes reached a comprehensive settlement with the university on April 6, making the school compliant with Title IX after eight sports were cut in January 2006 to save money. The three women's sports that were cut last spring were water polo, swimming and field hockey.

Fall break will return this year

More than 80 percent of students and faculty who responded to a university-wide survey regarding fall break were in favor of the break returning this year. Of the 1,568 respondents, 1,309 were in favor of the new five-day weekend addition to the academic calendar.

Author of chills coming for visit

Thanks to a local fourth grader, the possibility of R. L. Stine visiting Slippery Rock for Children's Day on April 21 is a reality. Casey Hall, 10, a fourth grader at the Slippery Rock Elementary School, gathered about 300 signatures from her schoolmates to bring Stine to her school last fall.

Controversy over constitution infringement may result in SGA re-election for one executive board position

Students may face another SGA vice presidential election if the senate disqualifies Michael Combs, the newly elected vice president of financial affairs, because he didn't attend the required number of SGA meetings before running for office. Commuter senator Steve Winslow motioned during Thursday's SGA meeting to acknowledge that the SGA Election Commission Committee and the SGA Executive Committee violated the legally binding Slippery Rock Student Government Association (SRSGA) Constitution by allowing Combs to run for office in elections held March 27 and 28.

New construction poses parking problem for lower end of campus

Students residing in ROCK Apartments and the new residential suites may have noticed a change in parking due to a recently closed-off road and parking lot. Part of the lower stadium lot and North Drive has been closed off due to construction of the new halls, Buildings E and F.
