Giving the silent treatment

Silence is a very powerful thing. And, in most cases, it's also louder than words. Since 1996, students across the nation have been participating in The Day of Silence that is held on April 18 where gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transsexuals and allies will go through the entire day in silence.

Arts festival returns for sixth year

Many students on campus major in art of some kind. Whether they have studied creative writing, sculpture, dance or theatre, chances are they have been second-guessed by some of their family or friends. Perhaps they have shifted uncomfortably on the other side of the table when their parents ask, "What are you going to do with that degree?" Next week, students majoring in arts and humanities will have an opportunity to respond to that criticism through the sixth annual Kaleidoscope Arts Festival.

Student-written, directed plays to take stage at end of month

As part of the sixth annual Kaleidoscope Arts Festival, the theatre department's Brave New Plays will return to the main stage, as the collection of a new student written and directed plays are performed April 24 through 28 at Miller Auditorium. Now a widely anticipated week of performances, the Brave New Plays began by chance 14 years ago by a small group of students taking a trial playwriting class taught by theatre department professor David Skeele.

Local band to make second appearance in area this year

Three events focus on sexual assault

"You don't have to be a man of steel to be a real man," said Christopher Reeve, who played the role of Superman in a handful of movies, in an interview after his horseback riding accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. A segment of this interview was shown in a video clip titled "Tough Guise," which was featured in one of the three events dealing with sexual assault that took place this week.

Double your pleasure: Directing duo delivers

In the early days of cinema, going to the movies was an event that could last hours upon hours. There would be a "B" movie, an "A" movie, maybe even a "C" movie, and then a few cartoons and newsreels. But with America's attention span only measurable in nanoseconds, the real challenge is getting an audience to sit still for more than 90 minutes.
