Senior offensive set/driver Erika Brunner scored five goals and recorded one assist on Sunday morning to lead the Rock women's water polo team's effort. But the team still fell, 16-9, to the Indiana Hoosiers at the Morrow Field House pool.
"It was a really good game, we played them better than we played Michigan," coach Jim Yeamans said. "We took three goals away from them."
With the tremendous and consistent performance that Brunner has showed all season, she now has a team-high 46 goals this season, while junior driver Beth Choike has scored 17 goals so far for second place honors on the team.
"Erika is the best all-around player," Yeamans said. "She is a warrior."
Choike, junior offensive set Ashley Goodwill, junior defensive set Sarah Sander and sophomore driver Heather Walbright each scored one goal in the losing effort for the Rock. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Surbaugh earned 13 saves.
The final score is a little misleading because the Rock only trailed by one goal (4-3) at the end of one period before the Hoosiers broke away.
On Saturday night, Choike scored twice in the 18-5 loss to No. 17 Michigan.
"They wore us down and they have 30 girls, so they kept substituting fresh players in the game," Yeamans said. "That set a toll on us, just like an ocean sending waves against us, knocking us down."
Sander, Brunner and Walbright each scored one goal to help the Rock effort, while Surbaugh collected 14 saves for SRU.
Earlier on Saturday in the weekend's first game, Choike scored four goals in a triple overtime loss to Mercyhurst, 9-8.
"We experienced the other side of an overtime game a couple of games ago," Yeamans said. "It shows how competitive we are. I am very proud of the team."
Choike scored the first two goals of the game, which gave the Rock a 2-0 lead at the conclusion of the first period.
"Choike just goes and gives you every ounce of energy she has," Yeamans said.
