The SRU softball team swept the doubleheader against Ursuline Tuesday, improving its record to 10-8 on the season. With the two wins, the Rock got above .500 for the first time since the win against Nebraska-Omaha during spring break.
"I think getting above .500 really helped everyone get pumped for the upcoming PSAC games," junior outfielder Ashley Stoner said. "Scores do not always reflect how a game went. We have a few games that we lost, but we did well fighting and coming back. I think this year has proven that we are ready to fight for the post-season."
SRU won the first game by the score of 6-0 and then pulled out a 2-1 win in the second game.
The Rock started its first home game of the year with a bang and took the early 1-0 lead off a solo home run by Stacey Rhoades in the bottom of the first inning.
After that, the Rock scored in the second, third and fourth innings to go up 6-0. SRU relied on the steady, consistent pitching of senior Courtney Conron, who pitched a complete game shut out and allowed five hits, four strikeouts and two walks. In the game, freshman Courtney Vincent broke the single-season stolen bases record with 17 on the season. Vincent swiped two bases in the game as she went 1-4 with two runs scored. The previous record was 16 by Shannon Tagliaferri in 2004. Vincent is currently is second place in steals this year in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
The second game started the same as the first game with Rhoades hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. In the bottom of the second inning, freshman Kaelin Mancuso hit another SRU home run to put the Rock up 2-0.
In the top of the fourth inning, Ursuline scored the only run of the doubleheader to make the score 2-1.
Rhoades was pitched a complete game in the second game, and only gave up one run. Rhoades struck out two and had one of the two errors in the game. The second game, however, was a little different for the team because of the weather and the delays that occurred, and because of it the game was shortened to six innings because of darkness.
