Proud to be an American citizen
Issue date: 3/30/07 Section: Rocket Letters
To the editor:
I am shocked to see The Rocket publish another America-bashing opinion article again this month. I am appalled and extremely disappointed with the lack of patriotism The Rocket portrays.
I hardly believe whoever would say "I love America" would be willing to go around impersonating citizenship of other countries. What is wrong with having pride in your country? My family went to war and defended the freedoms that we use daily. If that means that I am obnoxious, stupid and ignorant, then that's just wonderful. I enjoy all the freedom I have, and if I choose to watch mainstream movies, eat fast food and be completely ethnocentric, then so be it. I would rather be all of those than be embarrassed of my homeland.
I feel bad for those who believe that being an American automatically means that you are a loser. However, we don't dare criticize those countries that instantly judge us based upon our citizenship. It is true that a little open mindedness on either end could go a long way. America isn't perfect. Instead of denying your roots, embrace them. Nobody is forcing you to remain an American citizen. The way that many citizens (including myself) see it, if you don't like my country, then you are free to leave. If you don't agree with the way America is run, leave. If America has treated you so badly, get up and leave. If you want to leave, don't forget about the life you have lived. You had plenty of food, security, jobs, free speech, and most of all, freedom. Many people die trying to come to this wonderful country, so if you don't like the way America is run, and you don't feel up to the task to influence a positive change in society, leave. The rest of us will be proud to look like Americans; the obnoxious, sloppy, self-centered bigots the rest of the world (including yourself), has always pegged us for.

You just completely proved Ms. Wells-Pratt right with this response. I'm going to point out the less obvious problems with your comments.
I don't understand how you can be okay with being completely ignorant to the rest of the world. (Continued…)

Dear Tiffany,
Your statements regarding freedom and patriotism completely contradict your love-it or leave-it attitude. "If you don't agree with the way America is run, leave. (Continued…)

Tiffany,
Perhaps you need to read Jefferson's Declaration, especially the portion related to the obligation of citizens when a government becomes destructive of the unalienable Rights of the governed. (Continued…)
