The Rock women's water polo team (3-8) dropped an 11-3 match against California Lutheran on Saturday at the Wolverine Invitational in Michigan.

"We beat them a year ago and that gave them the determination to win," coach Jim Yeamans said. "The problem for us was the triple overtime we played the game before. We used a lot of energy up, and they took advantage of it."

Junior offensive set/driver Erika Brunner scored all three goals for the Rock, along with a kick-out and one steal.

Junior driver Beth Choike had one kick-out to go along with senior driver Megan Jo Ramage's one assist, and junior defensive set Sarah Sander recorded one steal. Sophomore driver Betsy Wilson rounded out the game with one steal, as fellow sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Surbaugh recorded 10 saves during the match and also racked up five steals.

Earlier that Saturday, the Rock defeated Gannon in triple overtime by a score of 9-8 in the Wolverine Invitational.

"Gannon is a huge rival," Yeamans said. "It was fantastic, and it felt great to beat those guys."

Brunner once again led the Rock effort by scoring five goals, recording two kick-outs and one steal.

Choike also helped out by scoring two goals, recording two kick-outs and one steal for the Rock.

Junior offensive set Ashley Goodwill and Wilson each tallied one goal in the victory.

Walbirght added to the Rock effort by causing three kick-outs, two steals and one assist, while Sander came away with one steal.

Surbaugh was solid in net for SRU as she racked up 21 saves and two steals during the game.

"She did everything to give them the opportunity to win," Yeamans said, referring to the effective performance of Surbaugh against Gannon.

The Rock suffered an 11-2 loss on Friday against Brown University in the first round of the Wolverine Invitational.

"They are a top-20 team, and they showed us why," Yeamans said. "It was an honor to compete against them. They are a better team, and it makes us a better team."
