After starting the season 4-0, the SRU softball team went 2-6 during spring break to be at .500 with a 6-6 record. The Rock dropped the three games of the week by a combined score of 18-10.
SRU dropped both games of the double-header to Minnesota State Moorhead 9-6 and 7-3. Then, the next day, the Rock lost to C.W. Post 2-1.
Junior Emily Novitsky had a simple explanation for why the Rock dropped the first three games.
"The teams that we faced down south were all nationally ranked, therefore the competition was a lot tougher," Novitsky said.
Coach Vashion Johnson agrees with Novitsky, but said that there is a little more to it than simply playing against ranked teams.
"We played very good regionally ranked teams," Johnson said. "I am excited about the losses, because these teams are very good. They were all close games and we were on the winning side in some of them. The defense is new and is gelling together, but our offense is there. We are also trying to find out who is our No. 2 pitcher."
The Rock won the fourth game of the week against Nebraska-Omaha by a score of 4-0.
They then lost the next three games to Indianapolis, 5-2, University of Massachusetts-Lowell, 10-1, and New Haven 9-3. The Rock's last win of the week came against UMass-Lowell by the score of 3-2.
Even though the Rock did not fair too well during the break, the girls learned many lessons from the trip.
"The team learned in Florida how to come together after those first games," Novitsky said. "We knew what we had to do and that was to step it up. This was a huge lesson. We knew that we were going to have to bring our A game and everyone had to become a leader. After this trip to Florida, I think we are ready to face the PSAC with full force."
The Rock will have to bring what they learned with them this weekend when the team travels to Washington, D.C., for a double-header against Howard and then the next day a double-header against Bowie State in Bowie, Md.
