With less than 10 seconds left in the game, Rock sophomore guard Amanda Nero hit a three-point basket to give SRU a 74-73 lead in its final regular season game of the 2006-07 season against hosting Clarion last Sunday.

SRU was on its way to its 10th win of the season, but all that joy from Nero's three pointer quickly turned to shock and disbelief when Clarion's My'Kea Cohill nailed a 12-foot runner, was fouled and hit a free throw with 2.3 seconds left to steal the 76-74 win away from the Rock.

"It was a disappointing finish to a disappointing season," coach Laurel Heilman said. "In that game, both teams were playing for pride, and we were wanting to pay them back because they beat us earlier in the season. Momentum was going back and forth between both teams and we just didn't make a stop at the end of the game."

The game was similar to how the Rock women's basketball season has turned out this year. SRU (9-17 overall, 3-9 PSAC West) ended the season with a four-game slide and is in last place in the PSAC West division.

After posting a modest 6-8 record against non-conference and PSAC East opponents at the beginning of the season, and having a 2-1 record in its first games against divisional foes, the Rock was primed for a potential second straight PSAC playoff berth.

But the Rock would have a tough path the rest of the way, dropping eight of its final nine games of the season and being eliminated from a postseason berth, thanks in part to close losses and inconsistent play from its young team, which only fielded one senior. The loss against Clarion (9-17 overall, 4-8 PSAC West) marked the fourth time this winter and second time in as many games SRU has lost a division game by three or less points. SRU lost a total of seven games by six or less points this winter, and another loss came in overtime.
