The SRU men's hockey team was eliminated from national tournament contention over the weekend after falling 2-1 in the College Hockey Mid-America playoffs to the Washington and Jefferson Colonials at the Bladerunners Ice Complex in Harmarville, Pa.
The Rock and the Colonials met twice previously this year. Both games were decided in shootouts. The game was a hard-fought, goaltender battle that came down to the very last second.
The first-period action was up and down the ice with several key saves made by junior goalie Kris Wisniewski and by the W&J goalie Andrew Torchla, and which would prove to be the storyline for the rest of the game. The Rock came out flying in the second period and ended up scoring the first goal of the game on an extended 5-3 power play. The goal was scored by sophomore Derek Rubarsky at 11:58 of the second period. The goal was assisted by junior John Tomasetti and sophomore Shaun Becker. The power play was extended because of the two bench minors given to the Colonials' head coach, Peter Taglianetti.
"The officiating was terrible. There were bad calls all around for both teams," junior captain Tim Snyder said. "The ref first said that their coach was thrown out, but then a minute later he was staying."
W&J answered right back a couple of minutes later to tie the game with their own power play goal with a shot that Wisniewski was unable to save. W&J took advantage of another power play opportunity in the third period and tally its second goal on the power play from a shot from the point to put the Colonials up 2-1.
SRU had numerous chances in the third period to tie the game, including a breakaway chance by senior Tim Ward, whose backhand shot rang off the post.
The Rock's season came to an end after a flurry of shots that could not get past the Colonial goalie in the final minutes.
"Overall, it was a great experience, and it was our first time getting this far in the Division-I playoffs," Snyder said.
