The SRU women's track team won its first indoor championship at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships in East Stroudsburg over the weekend.

The Rock finished with 162.50 points, while second place Lock Haven finished with 86.

"We had a great performance. The whole team ran well," coach John Papa said. "We did well in sprints, which is our strength. The first place finish was a total team effort. We are excited and pleased. We figured that if we ran well we would win."

The Rock earned six first- place finishes in the PSAC championships.

Senior Andi Rose won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.15, which was a meet record.

Also, Rose finished second in the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter hurdles.

For Rose's efforts at the meet, she was named the most valuable player in the overall and track-events categories.

"I think it defines her," Papa said. "Being the MVP of the conference is outstanding, and validated what we already knew. The MVP is voted on by the coaches and all of them voted for Rose."

Sophomore Vera McDaniel won the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.24 and won the 200-meter hurdles with a time of 25.55.

With these times, McDaniel qualified for the NCAA Division II National Indoor Championships.

Fellow sophomore Lacy Cochran garnered a first place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.37. Sophomore Jen Hansen won the pole vault with a height of 12 feet, 2 inches, while senior Jenny Kirsch garnered a first place in the long jump with a distance of 18 feet, 3 inches.

The last of the first place finishes for the Rock was the 4x400 relay team.

The team had a time of 3:54.82. Members of the relay team were Cochran, Rose, freshman Jessica Sackin and senior Melissa Sopher. With that time, the group qualified for the national championships.

Papa said he thinks the national stage will be a tough test for the team.

"It is going to be hard," Papa said. "They are about 13 seconds off the top time. Our goal is to be in the top eight, which is All-American status."
