The safety and environmental management degree program at Slippery Rock University was recently honored as one of the first three programs in the country to qualify for board approval by the National Safety Management Society's Institute for Safety and Health Management.
"The degree program meets the institute's curriculum standard for excellence," said Joesph Cali, chair of SRU's health and safety department. "This is great news for our current students and recent graduates."
SRU was recognized as one of three universities making a "significant contribution" to workplace safety in the future. The other programs to receive accreditation are Grand Valley State University in Michigan and West Virginia University.
Based in Missouri, the Institute for Safety and Health Management works to encourage safety and health in the workplace. Its mission states, "the Institute promotes the advancement of safety management through the application of management principles and the integration of safety into all levels and activities of management."
SRU qualified because its degree program includes more than 36 credit hours of specific instruction in the field, nine hours or more of management instruction, internship opportunities and has shown job placement success for graduates of the program.
"Slippery Rock University is now one of three universities in the United States to receive this designation as a significant contributor to the future of safety and health in the workplace," Cali said. "We are pleased and proud of the work being done by our faculty, students and graduates."
He said the honor enhances the academic reputation of the students in the department.
"The Institute's recognition enhances students' academic credentials as well as their professional credentials," Cali said. "Combined with the HAZWOPER training they receive over spring break, and the OSHA certification they receive in class, students are well prepared in searching for a job upon graduation."
