But eight years ago in Grove City, that's just what happened.
"Wake Your Neighbors VIII," a live show that will feature eight local bands and performers, will take place Saturday night in Grove City College's Crawford Auditorium.
Doors open at 5 p.m., with performances beginning at 6 p.m. The show will be headlined by Lovedrug, a nationally-known band that's on the Columbia Records music label.
Admission is $7, with half of the proceeds going to Gulf Outreach to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Tickets will not be sold in advance.
Matt Texter, who will be performing a series of originals on both guitar and harmonica, explained how the show, now in its eighth consecutive year, got its name.
"It actually sort of started out as an original event to feature some local bands," Texter, 27, said, divulging only half of the story. "Well, actually, it started when there were a couple of guys jamming in Grove City Park one night, and then they were approached by the cops, so it was sort of a rebellion at first and that's how we got the name."
Texter, who has been a part of the show for all eight years, is not alone. Bill Smith, drummer for the band Idiosympathy, has also been around since the show's introduction.
"Getting Lovedrug to come, that was really the big thing for the show this year," said Smith, a graduate of Grove City High School and 2004 graduate of SRU. "It just kind of shows that this thing is getting bigger and bigger, and it's becoming a big draw for the region, because of all the local bands."
Smith, 23, said the original show helped out someone in need.
"A bunch of us guys just played, and there was no official band or anything," he said. "Some people came out to watch us play, and then we just had a jar out there for people to donate to help one of my friends who had been diagnosed with cancer. It started out just for fun, but now it's just grown, especially this year with getting the college involved."
In addition to Idiosympathy and Lovedrug, Sam Goodwill, Jealousy Curve and The Lonely Hearts will also be performing.
