The Slippery Rock University track and field team had several strong individual performances in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Indoor Championships en route to both teams finishing in the top five of the PSAC last weekend.

The women placed second in the 13-team field while the men finished fourth out of 14 teams. The two-day tournament took place at East Stroudsburg and concluded the indoor track season.

"We knew that on the women's side that first and second was very possible for this group," coach John Papa said. "On the men's side, we knew we could get close to being in the top three if we had a great meet. Overall, we had a very good, solid meet and I'm very proud of everyone's performance."

The Rock broke four school records on the first day, and added another record on the second day while having two individual first place finishes.

Junior Andi Rose collected first place in the women's 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.36. Coupled with her time in the 55-meter hurdles event at the Akron Open on Feb. 3, Rose will compete in the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 10-11 in Boston.

"It means a lot to me to go to this tournament, and to represent myself and my school," Rose said. "I'm glad to go up there, but I want to compete well and win."

Rose was also a part of the 4x400 relay team that ran a meet and school record time of 3:57.08. Joining her on the team were seniors Jill Rekich, Alison Gardner and junior Melissa Sopher.

Junior Janiece Rash won the women's 55-meter dash with a time of 7.22 seconds, bettering her week-old school record in the preliminary round (7.21 seconds) despite a nagging hamstring.

"Janiece might be one of the best sprinters in SRU history," Papa said. "She had a hamstring injury a couple of weeks ago, and she has continued to fight through it and ran very well in the championships."

Freshman Vera McDaniel continued her strong season in successful fashion as she garnered herself a second place finish in the 200-meter dash and a third place finish in the 55-meter dash.
