President Robert Smith presented a PowerPoint to students and faculty that explains the budget breakdown for SRU Wednesday night. Smith explained that tuition continues to increase because the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education is not funding state universities as much as it did in the past.

In the 1970s, the state provided SRU 70 percent of their entire budget. Today it contributes less than half of that.

Eliminating a few sports is the university's attempt to make up for the lost income. Smith said he has already made adjustments and eliminations in the administration and academic programs; clerical and maintenance personnel may feel the repercussions of this tight budget next.
