The Slippery Rock University men's basketball team ended the 2005-06 campaign with back-to-back losses to two of the top four teams in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western division.
On Wednesday, the Rock dropped its last home game of the season to IUP by a score of 82-72. With the win, IUP improved its record to 18-8 overall and 6-5 in the PSAC West, and is now firmly in the PSAC playoffs.
The Rock (2-25 overall, 1-11 PSAC West) finished with a 2-11 record at Morrow Field House this season.
"It has been a long season for us," coach John Marhefka said. "We wanted to put it all together and win on our home court to end the season and get a positive heading into next year."
Sophomore guard Jamar Scales scored 10 of the Rock's first 13 points in the game. Scales ended the game with a team-high 18 points and shot 66 percent from the floor.
The Rock would hold the lead for much of the first half and even had two occasions when it led by eight points. IUP made a 9-0 run in the final 2:19 of play in the half to take a 39-38 lead at halftime.
With nearly five minutes gone in the second half, the Rock trailed IUP, the No. 1 scoring offense in the PSAC this year, 50-49. The Rock would tie the game at 58 following two free throws from freshman guard Matt Hale with less than 10 minutes left to play. Once the game was tied, IUP made an 18-4 run to take a 76-62 lead. IUP secured a double digit lead the rest of the way.
With this being the last game of the season, it was also senior Dejan Jancic's last game in a SRU uniform. Jancic had 14 points and 15 rebounds in his final game of his collegiate career. The double-double was Jancic's third of the season.
Last Saturday, the Rock suffered its worst loss of the season to PSAC West first place team Shippensburg (21-4, 10-0) by a score of 77-34. The Rock shot 14 percent from the floor and sank only 8-of-55 shots in what was a lopsided contest.
