The Student Government Association favors the idea of using an online voting system for the elections scheduled on March 28 and 29.

This type of voting process will cost about $300 and is considered very secure.

Senator Ashley Clark said many students can't make it to the polling booths and many commuters don't use the dining halls where polling booths are established.

A record of 1,500 students voted in the 1999 election, but only 400 people turned out last year.

"The great thing about this is it takes personalities out of the voting," Cathy George of Cooperative Activities said.

Parliamentarian Hayley Zanella said this would have to be approved. There is no guarantee that this would be replacing or used in addition to the paper ballots.

Clark said candidates will not be able to see how students are voting with this process until after elections are completed. Other colleges such as Penn State and Bloomsburg use this type of online voting.

Clark said a secure system like Blackboard or RockTalk would be used.

In open forum, a concerned student and resident of Kraus Hall said the crosswalk on Main Street in front of the residence hall is not safe.

George said the Slippery Rock Borough Council is already looking into something similar to the crosswalk next to Weisenfluh Dining Hall to better mark the walkway to drivers.

Vice President for Financial Affairs Preston Gibbs is currently reviewing the budget for campus organizations for next year. He said he is also looking into having Morrow Field House open for students to use in their own time.

Junior dance major Caitlin Sadecky was sworn in as the new Rock Apartment senator, while sophomore education major Scott McCaskey was sworn in as a commuter senator.

WSRU-TV, Residential Commons and Residential Interests, Korean Tiger Club, Rock Raquetball Club and the men's and women's water polo teams have been recognized as clubs.

The next SGA meeting will be at 12:35 p.m. in room 207 of the University Union on March 7.
