Amanda Chojnacki goes for the jump shot against Edinboro's Maria Divecchio. The Rock lost, 68-61.

The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team fell behind early and couldn't catch Edinboro as the Fighting Scots defeated the Rock, 68-61, Wednesday night at Morrow Field House.

Edinboro's Jessi Montie hit a jumper five seconds into the game as the Fighting Scots led 2-0. The Rock tied the score when Jessica Schake hit a bucket seconds later.

After Edinboro scored on its next time down the floor, Schake tied the score for the second time on a layup.

But the Fighting Scots went on a 10-2 run in the next three minutes to take a commanding lead, forcing the Rock to play catch up for the rest of the game.

The loss, which dropped the Rock (8-9 overall, 0-2 PSAC West) ended the Rock's two-game winning streak against PSAC-East opponents.

The Fighting Scots (13-3, 1-0) extended its win streak to six games.

Edinboro coach Laurel Heilman said the Scots came out firing from the start.

"They (Edinboro) jumped on us at the beginning," Heilman said. "We just had a lot of breakdowns defensively. It felt like they were shooting 100 percent."

After a run, which brought Edinboro's lead to 14-6, Kristen Bonner hit a three and KellyAnn Staudinger scored to cut the lead to three.

But Edinboro quickly extended its lead after an Amanda Chojnacki turnover led to another jumper by Montie to make the score 20-11.

SRU committed six turnovers in the first half and 15 for the game while Edinboro only had six overall. In the first half, the Scots scored nine points off turnovers while the Rock was held scoreless in that department.

The points off turnovers margin was 16-4 for the game, a crucial difference that led to Edinboro's 36-29 lead at halftime.

"We're playing hard but we've got to play smart," Heilman said. "We knew we didn't play well at halftime."

"I think the first half we were really fortunate to only be down by only seven, Heilman said."

In the second half, things were no different as the Scots extended the lead to 12 five minutes into the half.

Edinboro's Maria Divecchio scored to take the Fighting Scot lead to 10 with 8:39 left in the game. However, the Rock, who were helped out by reserve players late in the game, opened up an 11-5 lead and cut the lead to five with 2:17 on the clock after a couple free throws by Amanda Kaufman.
