Students must be patient with construction even with delays
Issue date: 1/20/06 Section: Opinion
To say that Slippery Rock University is beginning a period of major transition would be a major understatement right now.
Construction is rampant around the Rock. It's been that way for some time now, really starting with the construction of the new science building, continuing with the current construction of the new dorms and planning for the future of a new union as well as other possible venues that could accompany it.
With all of these major projects going on, the university is well on its way towards being ideal for the 21st century student. But a reality that could exist is the possibilities of delays. It's happened before. Just look at the new science and the technology building that has been delayed beyond its scheduled date. In the overall scheme of things, it didn't hurt anything, but it does slow down the progress of the overall plan of the university.
During this project, patience will have to be exuded not only by students, but by the administration as well. This will be a project that will take a couple years at least and could be more depending on the overall outline of the construction plans. How long this takes should not be an issue, though. A project as big and as important for the university should be done right even if it means it takes longer to do it. If this overall university revitalization project is rushed and then something needs repaired, the overall time it will take to fix it the second time will be about the same anyway. Doing it right the first time will be better for everyone.
The vote for the new union was taken just before winter break. There were probably a number of students who questioned what the importance of voting for the union was considering they would not even be enjoying the completion of the project. For those that may be here when everything is completed, they just happen to be the lucky ones. For those of us that may be juniors and seniors and won't see the new dorms while we're still at college, hey, that just happens. The older students should be proud that they were around to see a part of this period of change here.
Being here at Slippery Rock University is different than being at say, high school. Students generally don't have much choice of where to go to high school, especially in a public school system. But when students decide to go to college, the important thing is that they get to decide. Why students complain about going here when they made the decision to go here is astounding and yet it happens all the time. The point here is that no matter when a student went to school here, they should have pride in what the university was, what the university is and what the university will be in 20 years.
At The Rocket, we feel that if delays happen because of construction or other projects, the students need to exercise some patience and look at the bigger picture; this project is for the greater good of Slippery Rock University and for the classes that are still to come.
