Going into the IUP Invitational swimming tournament, the Slippery Rock University men's and women's swimming teams had plenty of individual expectations entering competition.
"Overall I thought they (the team) did extremely well at IUP," graduate assistant Nathan Walters said. "Our enthusiasm was up and I think that helped our performance in the pool."
Day one featured a win in the women's 50-yard freestyle by graduate student Jen Zuzack with a time of 24.34. Junior Megan Jo Ramage also placed third in the 500-yard freestyle for the Rock.
Day two featured more of the same from SRU. Ramage captured a victory in the 400-yard individual medley, securing a time of 4:46.60. Also for the Rock, Zuzack earned a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.23.
For the men's team, the 200-yard medley relay of junior Zach Liddle, senior Bradley Bowers, freshman Scott Taylor, and junior Kevin Maksinchuk placed fourth with a time of 1:44.98. Taylor also placed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (55.34). Freshman Leland Thompson also earned fourth place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.23). Rounding out the fourth place finishers for the Rock was the team of freshman Tony D'Emidio, Thompson, Maksinchuk, and Taylor in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
The final day of competition featured another blue ribbon for both Zuzack and Ramage. For Zuzack, a victory in the 200-yard backstroke marked her third event victory in as many days. Ramage finished up winning the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:34.73, giving her two wins for the tournament.
For the men, Bowers earned a fourth place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.71) and also swam a leg on the fourth place finishing 400-yard freestyle team. Also on that squad were Taylor, Thompson, and Maksinchuk.
For the invitational, the women's teams finished in sixth place out of seven teams while the men finished in last place.
Despite their finishes Walters sees the invitational as a growing experience and allowed him to get a better idea of what his team is made of for the second semester.
"We learned a lot about things to take on for next semester," Walters said. "If we can improve on them and focus on getting everyone qualified for the conference meet at the end of the year I think the second semester will be a good one for all of us."
