Slippery Rock University is currently in first place in the Dixon Trophy standings to conclude the 2005 fall sports season.

The Dixon Trophy is given to the top athletic program out of the 14 team Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Points are awarded on how well a school's athletic program finished in the PSAC playoffs and regular season competition year round from fall to spring sports.

The Dixon Trophy is named in honor of F. Eugene Dixon Jr., Chairman of the State System of Higher Education's Board of Governors. The first Dixon Trophy was awarded at the conclusion of the 1995-96 academic year.

"The Dixon Trophy standings are very important to us," SRU Athletic Director Paul Lueken said. "It's a gauge of our overall athletic program compared with other schools around the state. It's a report card on how well we do on the field, the court, the track, and the pool."

The Rock has the lead over the other 13 schools in the standings with a 68 point total. The Rock's men's fall sports teams finished with a 40.5 point total, highest in the conference. On the women side, the Rock fall sports teams scored 27.5 points, sixth in the PSAC.

The Rock picked up a maximum point total of 14 in both men's and women's soccer due to both teams winning the PSAC championship.

The Rock got 11 points due to its finish in the men's cross country championships, 8.5 points for its share of third place in the PSAC West in football, seven points each for a fifth place finish in men's golf and an eighth place finish in women's cross country, 5.5 points for its share of third place in the PSAC West in women's volleyball, and one point for its eight place finish in field hockey.

"It's a great start and the best start since I have been here," Lueken said. "Winning the PSAC title in both men's and women's soccer helped us out a lot. We have been competitive in every fall sport this year."

Indiana of Pennsylvania holds the second place spot in the Dixon Trophy standings with 65.5 point total. Edinboro is third with 58.5 points followed by Kutztown with 58 points, West Chester with 57.5 points and both Bloomsburg and California of Pennsylvania with 57 points each.

Shippensburg, a three-time defending Dixon Trophy winner, is next with 52.5 points. Rounding out the list is Lock Haven with 52 points, Millersville with 45 points, East Stroudsburg with 44.5 points, Clarion with 37.5 points, Mansfield with 25 points and Cheyney with four points.

The Rock finished eighth in the Dixon Trophy standings the in its inaugural season in 1995-96. The Rock placed fifth a year later, and the finished sixth for the next four years.

SRU took home an eighth place finish in 2001-02, but then achieved its best finish ever with a third place finish a year later. The Rock finished fifth in 2003-04, and took home eight place honors last year.

At the conclusion of the academic year, each school will take its best 12 finishes, six men's and six women's sports, and will be calculated to see who will attain the honor.
