The Commonwealth Association of Students (CAS) filed a grievance against SRU's Late Night TaskForce concerning the task force's process of denying late-night funding to organizations.

CAS President Mike Cornetti said the organization provided the task force with all the requested information regarding their proposal for a Valentine's weekend dance, but were denied funding.

Representatives of CAS composed a letter of complaint, which they then sent to Assistant Vice President of Student Development Paula Olivero, Vice President of Student Life Robert Watson, UPB President Nicole Barraclough and the Rocket.

According to the issued letter, CAS was denied funding for a proposed Valentine's weekend dance without receiving reasoning for the task force's rejection.

"In short, members of the Commonwealth Association of Students feel that decisions made by the Late Night TaskForce regarding funding requests are made in an arbitrary fashion and are cliquish in nature, and thus are detrimental to the welfare of students at Slippery Rock University," the letter said.

Cornetti said that he personally feels the task force is cliquish because of the limited variety of organizations that have representatives on the task force.

"It's the same students on SGA, UPB, the task force, the union committee - and that's where I get the cliquish thing from," Cornetti said. "It's the same group of students making decisions."

Cornetti said that CAS is trying to figure out exactly why its proposal was denied.

In their letter, representatives of CAS request information regarding the makeup of the Late Night TaskForce's members, the amount of funding available to the task force for the 2005-06 academic year and what programs received funding. CAS members request that task force meetings be open and held in a public setting.

Olivero and Julie Varnish, coordinator of student activities in the center for student leadership, said the task force is comprised of representatives from seven different student organizations: SUMA, ARHS, IFC, Panhel, SGA, UPB and NPHC.

Each organization chooses one representative. Olivero said student representatives sometimes change each semester, depending on the organization.

Olivero said the organizations represented on the task force were chosen based on the number of students each represents and the programming experience each has.
