Nyssa Mendoza, a freshman resident in Founders Hall, is sworn in by Vice President of Student Life Richard Graham as Founders Hall senator at the SGA Senate meeting Thursday.

Planning and discussion regarding the renovation of the current University Union, or construction of a new one has been going on all semester long.

Students were given the opportunity to place their vote Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

As of Thursday afternoon, 555 students voted for the Union Referendum.

Flyers, mass mailers and an advertisement in The Rocket were used to inform students of the vote.

"We think it's probably just because students don't care," Vice President of Student Advancement Amie Homa said. "They (probably) feel they won't be here when the new union is built so why should they vote."

Homa said other reasons for lack of student participation may be due to to the fact that students are tired of the construction on campus with the Science and Technology Building and new residence halls.

The results will be tabulated today, but will not be available until next semester.

In other SGA news: Vice President of Financial Affairs Preston Gibbs said student minimum wages will increase from $5.15 to $6 starting in January.

"I actually feel like it's about time (for the pay rate to rise)," Gibbs said. "I've always felt that students were underpaid. I'm happy that it's come about."

SGA has adopted Austin, a 4-year-old boy for Project Christmas Elf.

Graham said there are two other children from Pittsburgh that the SGA is giving gifts to as well.

In Senate news, the SGA is looking to fill the Kraus Hall senate position. Nyssa Mendoza was elected to fill the vacant senator position for Founders Hall.

Tow co-op at large positions are still vacant. These positions would require students to make decisions about the financial budget for SGA.

Senators Emily Burchfield and Mike Baranowski resigned from the Senate because they will not be here next semester.

Speaker of the Senate Tom Pitzer publicly thanked them for their work..

The SGA also was granted $3,160.80 from the Late Night Task Force to spend toward a drive-in movie on April 29 as a campus year-end event.

The SGA is collaborating with University Program Board (UPB) for this event. The proposed theme is the 1950s.

The next Senate meeting will be held on Jan. 26, 2006 at 12:35 p.m. in room 207 of the Union.
