The Center for Student Leadership and AVI food services held an SRU version of the TV program, Iron Chef, in Weisenfluh Dining Hall Wednesday.
Vice President of Student Life Robert Watson said Shane McGoey, assistant director of the center for student leadership was responsible for the creation of the event.
The competition featured two teams; each comprised of two SRU staff members, and was emceed by Director of Campus Recreation Greg Sferra.
The teams were assigned to create a meal using strips of boneless chicken breast.
Watson and teammate Karen Perry, assistant director of campus recreation, chose to make a Spicy Southwestern Chicken dish.
"It's a recipe that's basically very healthy; it has a lot of vegetables and we mixed a mango salsa with it," Watson said. "(Perry) had made it before and felt that we could make it in less than 30 minutes and that it was a good choice because students could make it on their own."
Director of Intercultural Programs DaNine Fleming and teammate George Mihalik, professor of health and safety and SRU football coach, made a pasta primavera with vegetables and chicken cordon bleu.
Fleming and Mihalik won the competition, which was judged by Deb Pincek, assistant to the vice president of student life, and Associate Provost Amanda Yale, along with two SRU students.
Watson said he spoke to students after the event who expressed interest in a student version of the competition. Watson said he enjoyed the event and would like to see it more in the future. He plans to look into making it a regular event for students to take part in.
