The president of Allegheny Mineral and vice president of Snyder Associated Inc., donated $250,000 to Slippery Rock University for the new Science and Technology building opening in the spring semester.
Dennis Snyder said there has been discussion in his family of donating in the past, but they were just looking for a vehicle. He said his family has made contributions in the past, but none of this magnitude.
The family is local to this area despite Snyder being an alumnus of Muskingum College in Ohio, and Snyder said they have a lot of employees in Butler County. He said they donated to the Science and Technology Building because it is more in line with the type of work they do. They are interested in the facility being used, and people getting educated in the field of science.
The new facility will include a lobby, which will become a showcase for students and visitors, in the name of the Snyder Charitable Foundation, according to a press release on Nov. 21, 2005 on the SRU website. The lobby will include furniture and wall art along with a plaque commemorating the foundation's gift.
SRU President Robert Smith said in a press release he is appreciative of the support.
"The Snyder family and Snyder Associated companies personify the values the university holds dear: a solid work ethic that is the foundation for success and a generous commitment to the community in which we live and work," Smith said. "We are indeed honored that the family has selected Slippery Rock University for this most important contribution. This gift will have a dramatic impact on the region, the campus and the local community. The support of the Snyder family is deeply appreciated."
The university's new Science and Technology Building, currently under construction, will be ready in the Fall of 2006.
