The Slippery Rock University volleyball team saw the end of its best season since 1994 last night in a NCAA regional playoff game to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West rival Indiana of Pennsylvania.

The Rock got swept by IUP 3-0, (30-25, 30-26, 30-21).

The Rock and IUP split a pair of regular season matches, with the home team winning both times.

Leading the Rock was senior Lindsay Weber with her 13 kills, two service aces and five digs in her last game for SRU. Weber along with seniors Megan Smith and Layna Heilman-Houser ended their SRU careers Thursday night.

Freshmen Jen Blasko chipped in with 11 kills while sophomore Louise Schultz and freshmen Anastasia Urbanik added five kills each in the losing effort.

Junior Sara Kirsch earned 33 assists and 12 digs while junior Gwen Oberlin recorded nine digs.

With the loss, the Rock ends its 2005 season with a 24-10 record. The Rock was tied for third place in the PSAC West and received its first NCCA playoff bid since 2000.

The Rock is 1-4 all-time in the NCAA playoffs. The only Rock NCAA playoff victory came against Presbyterian in 1993 in the opening round. The Rock eventually lost to Gannon in the next round of the playoffs that same year. The Rock also lost first round matches to Edinboro in 1994 and to IUP in 2000.

On Wednesday, both Kirsch and Urbanik were named as first team PSAC Western Divisional selections. Urbanik also received PSAC West Rookie of the Year.

Urbanik .336 kill percentage this season is the second best mark in Rock volleyball history while her 417 kills is the 11th best single season total in school history.

Kirsch led the PSAC in assists with a 12.51 per game average and ranked fourth in the conference in service aces with a 0.50 average.

Kirsch currently ranks third in career assists at SRU with 3,461. She is also fourth in single-season service aces with 54 this fall, three away from the school record, and her 1,364 assists this fall ranks fifth on SRU's single-season record books.
