The Slippery Rock University Roller Hockey club opened its 2005 season a few weeks ago and is looking for recognition.
The Rock has three different teams with different players in three leagues.
In each league, the Rock competes with such schools as the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University, Robert Morris University, Grove City College and Carnegie Mellon University.
The roller hockey team was initially started last year by Adam Jourdan and Vincent Celender. Also last year, the team was designated as an official club sport.
SRU and the other teams in the league play all of its games at Neville Island or Robert Morris University Sports Center Complex. The Rock usually plays all of its games on either Wednesday or Thursday nights in the evenings.
The Rock practices at the Aebersold Student Recreation Center (ARC).
Roller hockey has the same rules as regular ice hockey, but the one exception is that there is supposed to be little to no contact between players.
Junior Mike Cummings is the goaltender for the third team and knows how tough this sport is to play.
"It's a tough sport to get used to," Cummings said. "Goaltending, which is my position, can sometimes be difficult, but all in all it's a lot of fun out there learning and playing with your friends."
In all three leagues, each team faces one another in the season. The team's records set up seeding for the playoffs. The playoffs are single elimination with the finals being a three-game series.
In the first league, the Rock is tied for fourth in an eight team division with a 3-3 record. The Rock has outscored opponents, 33-31 this season and is averaging 5.5 goals per game. The Pittsburgh "A" squad is currently in first place with a 5-0 record.
In the second league, the Rock is currently in last place in the seven-team division with a 0-6 record.
The Rock has been outscored 51-16 and looks to seek its first win of the season and maybe even an upset or two in the playoffs.
