Stereotyping never the right answer
Issue date: 11/18/05 Section: Rocket Letters
To the Editor:
This is in response to Mike Goodwin's letter about using religion to deflect blame. I believe his article was written out of ignorance. I'm not being negative or critical of Mr. Goodwin when I say that, all I'm saying is that there are over 150 million Christians in this country and I doubt he met them all. What I mean is that his article was written out of what he has known to be a Christian either from personal experience or other. He's never met me. My beliefs are not by any means inherited. My beliefs are formed from my own experiences and struggles and my beliefs are not even done being formed! Being a Christian is about my personal relationship with God, that's all I know. I'm not gay therefore gay marriage doesn't bother me at all. I don't think abortion is a good thing but that doesn't mean I am against it. Christmas is a time to be with your family and I think that's what God had intended it to be. I know a lot of Christians that feel the same way I do.
When I read articles like Mr. Goodwin's, I think of all the people who think every Muslim is an America hating terrorist. That's not accurate and either is his perception of Christians. Do you really think that all Christians are out to get Mike Goodwin and everyone else at the Dead Kennedys concert? I'm not saying there aren't some but honestly the vast majority are not. My point is this, stereotyping is wrong. In every instance it's wrong and always will be.
