Alcohol law discussion wastes time
Issue date: 11/11/05 Section: Rocket Letters
To the Editor:
Drinking and complaints, an SRU normal.
Over the past semester, I have heard my share of complaints from my fellow students. Whether it is about the food, residence halls, or my all time favorite, DRINKING, SRU students have something to complain about and The Rocket has been the forum for all them. I totally agree with free speech and public forums where students can do such a thing, however I do not think certain topics are worth the time wasted on such complaints.
Drinking seems to be the topic that people waste the most time talking about and why, you ask? It is simply the fact that students feel they should have the right to do things that the law says they should not. If the government of Pennsylvania wanted the teens of our wonderful state to drink, it would allow them. Why waste time complaining about something you cannot control? If you believe that students should be able to drink alcohol when they are of the age of 18 then take it up with the personnel who work at the capitol in Harrisburg! There should be no reason for complaints if students would obey the law.
Personally I feel for both sides of this topic. I believe alcohol does allow you to have a good time to an extent. Most people, however, do not know when enough is enough and do not know when to stop. This brings out the harassment suits, bad decisions, public drunkenness, DUIs and accidents associated with DUIs. Not to mention the list of deaths due to people drinking too much or killing someone behind the wheel of a car. It is a law because they would prefer that this stops because of the number of deaths caused by underage alcohol consumption. Yes, it is understandable that you want to drink, however, unless you are over 21, you will get caught.
I have nothing against having fun, however if you want to break the law, stop complaining about it. The police officers around SRU are doing their job, and if you want to break that law then you will pay the consequences. No I do not have anything against drinking, just stop the complaining about not being able to do it on campus and getting caught!
