Meghan McGrath scored the tying goal and the eventual game winning goal in Slippery Rock's 4-1 win over Edinboro University Tuesday afternoon on rain-soaked Bob DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
With the quarterfinal win over the Fighting Scots, SRU advances to play IUP in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs today at 1:00 p.m.
Edinboro struck first within the first five minutes of play to give the Fighting Scots a 1-0 lead, but they would not find the net again for the remaining 85 minutes.
"After Edinboro scored the first goal, there could have been a tendency to be frustrated, but I kept telling the girls there's plenty of time left," coach Noreen Herlihy said. "I told them to keep playing their game and the goals would eventually come."
It was the first goal that Jen McCormick had given up against Edinboro all season.
"With the first goal everybody was too worried about setting up and marking players and the goal just slipped past me," McCormick said. "I didn't even have to say anything to the defense; we all knew we were thinking the same thing and the defense totally stepped it up the rest of the game. We came to play."
SRU kept constant pressure on Edinboro throughout the entire game, and in the 27th minute McGrath created space for herself near the 18-yard line and snuck a low liner through the hands of Edinboro goalkeeper Trish Chilcott.
It was the first goal the Rock has scored on Chilcott in over 200 minutes. Both times the team's faced each other in the regular season the game ended in a scoreless tie.
"It's kind of funny because they scored the same way on Jen," McGrath said. "I just kept the ball on the ground and hoped that it slipped through her hands."
The game went into halftime tied 1-1. It wouldn't stay that way for long. A minute into the second half McGrath took a crossing pass from Danielle Cooper and deposited it in the net to put the Rock up 2-1.
