To the Editor:

On October 25, I attended the Faculty and Guest Artist concert at Miller Auditorium. I arrived at 7:30 p.m. giving myself enough time to find a seat and read over the program. I was quite agitated when the concert started 50 minutes after my arrival! The rest of the audience who sat waiting was quite annoyed as well. I noticed that several people arrived well after the time that the concert was supposed to start, which was 8:00 p.m. I do not understand this.

It was later brought to my attention that the concert was held for 20 minutes because at 8:00 there was quite a long line to buy tickets. If the concert was not held these people may have walked in after the first dance had begun, causing a chaos as they tried to find their seats, or they would have been seated after the first dance was completed, causing a pause in the program and therefore interrupting the dancers' concentration.

I would like to give some rules on concert etiquette.

Arrive early. Chances are there will be a line to buy tickets, especially if the concert is a requirement for classes. If you do not mind missing the first dance because of lateness then you should not be at the concert. If you need it for a class, but feel it is a waste of your time, do not come, and take the zero for the assignment. Do not ruin the experience of those who are their on their own accord.

Buy your tickets early. If you know you have a night class until 8:00 or 8:30, buy your tickets in advance so that you do not hold up the concert once you arrive. This is also a good idea because the concert might be sold out, just as this concert was. If you have a late class or prior commitment, this is quite a legitimate excuse. If you do not, shame on you for being late.

Since the concert was started late the dancers were not properly warmed up because they had to wait an extra 20 minutes that they had not planned on waiting. Not to mention the first dancer stood on stage waiting for an extra 20 minutes waiting to dance. The musician's instruments also had an extra 20 minutes to cool down which is not good for the sound of the instrument.

Be fair to your fellow colleges, community and performers and arrive early. Do not make the shameful walk to your seat after the time the event was supposed to start. If you do this, know the majority of the audience knows proper concert etiquette and is shaking their head at you as you are seated by the ushers.
