Homecoming ruined by police
Issue date: 11/4/05 Section: Rocket Letters
To the Editor:
As an SRU student, this year was the first where I was actually excited for homecoming. Where did this excitement over homecoming suddenly come from do you ask? This was the first homecoming in which my friends and I were all 21. I looked forward to, and actually anticipated, homecoming this year because I knew my chances of getting into "trouble" with the police were now minimal. I couldn't have agreed with "The Rocket" more when reading the "Our View" section last week. I cannot count the number of times I have had to run through the woods, pray that the cops wouldn't actually come in the place where I was or debate on whether or not it was actually worth going out and running the risk. As a senior, I have seen many fellow students go home EVERY weekend, go to another college or university, and/or even transfer because sometimes, lets face it - at this place it's not easy to have fun. A lot of times, sadly, it just isn't worth the risk of getting kicked out of school for one night of fun.
Parties are social gatherings in which you bond with or make the best of friends. As I have been told (over and over again by adults) college is the best time of your life. How can one have "the best time of their life" if they feel they are being constantly monitored? College is a time full of pressures. It's unhealthy to not be able to let go and have some fun every once in a while. We college students shouldn't have to deal with the added pressure of worrying about getting into trouble with the police.
Moving on to another point of interest (or lack there of)….the LCB. If I had one dollar every time I heard the LCB was coming to town I might have been able to pay for all of my text books this semester. In my 3 ½ years at SRU I have never actually had the privilege of meeting any of these esteemed professionals but I know, first hand, that the rumors of their presence can strike fear in the hearts of many.
One time, good friends of mine actually did come into contact with the infamous LCB. My friends felt the LCB was just trying to frighten them by interrogating them and patting them down but then actually letting them go even though they were technically breaking a law. If the LCB is just trying to scare us, don't bother - we have parents who have taken that job to the next level. If the LCB is here to DO something, then good for them - if not, why even bother coming?
The last thing that we, as college students, need to worry about is getting into senseless trouble and having to pay fines that we can't afford for simply going to a party. Everyone needs to let loose every so often and shouldn't have to worry about paying a price for it. If people's lives are in danger, then by all means, the police should intervene. However, if students are simply trying to have a little harmless fun (especially on their HOMECOMING) then just let it go!
So, AMEN ROCKET! Preach on! "Let the college students actually BE college students."
