What exactly is Ultimate Frisbee? Is it just a sport you play with your dog Sparky? Is it just a recreational sport? Or is it just a casual sport that hippies played back in the 1970's?

Well, now it's a Slippery Rock University club activity.

Recently, a group of SRU students put aside their own time in order to play Ultimate Frisbee at the next level, the club sports level.

On the weekend of Oct. 8-9, these students competed in an Ultimate Frisbee tournament at Edinboro. Even though the Rock had a 1-5 record in pool play, the Rock won a playoff game and finished 11th in the 40 team field.

The 11th place finish is remarkable knowing the Rock only had a couple of weeks to train for the tournament and are just now starting to become a club sport.

The first game of the tournament for the Rock was against Ithaca College's "A" squad and the Rock went down 13-8. In the next game, the Rock lost to the University of Pittsburgh's "A" squad, 13-1. The Rock then lost a 13-3 decision to SUNY-Buffalo team in the next game.

The Rock then battled the University of Houghton to a close 12-10 loss and lost a 13-3 decision to the team "Love Bomb," a group from the Pittsburgh region. The Rock got its first win against Carnegie Mellon University recreation team by the score of 13-9.

After pool play was completed, the Rock took a 15-8 decision from Ithaca College's "B" squad, but then loss to Allegheny College by the score of 15-9 in the playoffs for its last game of the tournament.

Ultimate Frisbee is a sport of great speed and endurance. It is similar to football and soccer in some aspects.

The game is played on a 120-yard field with two end zones on both sides. The game is usually played seven-on-seven and it is self-officiated, which means that the players call their own fouls.

In order to score, a team must pass the disc down the field after the other team throws it down field, similar to a kickoff in football. When a player receives the Frisbee, the player can't move unless his or her momentum carries them when catching the disc. The person must then pass the disc to a teammate and they must try to go across the goal-line in order to score. Each score is worth one point. The first team to score a set number of points, usually 13 or 15 points, win the game.
