The Slippery Rock University golf team finished up the first half of its season last week at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Fall Golf Championship.
SRU finished 5th in the tournament and senior co-captain Matt Walsh finished tied for 8th individually, which was held at Wren Dale Golf Club in Hummelstown.
The team's best finish came at the Kuhn Memorial Invitational when they finished 6th out of 13 teams.
Overall on the semester, SRU fell short of team expectations.
Senior co-captain Adam Scott played well in the fall season, earning PSAC player of the week honors for the week of Sept. 20th. Walsh enjoyed the same honor a week earlier.
"We weren't consistent enough throughout the semester," Walsh said. "I think the biggest thing we need to work on is our scoring on the last day of tournaments."
Walsh said he needs to improve his approach shooting with his wedges but was very happy about his putting game in the fall season.
The team was led by head coach Dave Crunkleton, who will not be back as coach next semester. Crunkleton will retire to South Carolina.
Instead, Assistant Coach Marty Rinkler will take over as head coach.
"We have a lot of confidence in Marty. He is very knowledgeable about the golf swing which will be a big help to everybody, and freshmen especially," Walsh said.
Although the team didn't meet expectations in the first semester, Walsh said the team is confident going into next semester.
"We didn't lose any seniors so that's going to be a key to our success," Walsh said. "Also, the freshmen are only going to get better...we're in a pretty good position right now."
