The Slippery Rock University field hockey team fell to Kutztown Tuesday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchup, 4-1.
At halftime, the score was 4-0 in favor of the Golden Bears. Entering the second half, it looked like Kutztown (13-5 overall, 7-5 PSAC) was going to shutout SRU (2-13, 1-12) until sophomore Sara D'Amario scored the only goal in the game off a pass from sophomore teammate Janice Feduke.
The win was Kutztown's second against the Rock this year.
On Homecoming Saturday, SRU defeated the Millersville Marauders 5-4 on DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
D'Amario scored the first goal of the game to give the Rock a 1-0 advantage. Shortly after, Millersville's Jaclyn Kulessa scored a goal to even the score at 1-1.
Then things got out of hand for Millersville and the Rock went on its rally.
Kara Smith took the second goal of the game as the Rock took the lead back, 2-1. Minutes later, Kathleen Ross added a third goal with 10:41 left in the half with an assist from D'Amario and Ashley Stoner.
Smith added her second goal of the game to give SRU a 4-1 lead. Heather Hassinger picked up the assist. Four minutes later, Ashley Hanna topped the Slippery Rock rally off with the final score of the game and half for the Rock.
"The way we came out in the first half, we attacked well and capitalized on our quarters," coach Sergio Gonzalez said. "We came out with great intensity."
As the second half started, Millersville turned the game's momentum around. The team scored three unanswered goals, but was not able to cap off the impressive rally.
"This year shows we can compete with everyone in the conference. I am very happy how our team progressed through the season," Gonzalez said. "We graduate three talented seniors but I think the future is still bright."
The Rock field hockey team travels to East Stroudsburg tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. for its final game of the 2005 season.
