There is only one Saturday each year in which athletes, coaches, students, alumni, fans, and parents come together to enjoy an afternoon together.
Every October, colleges and universities and their respective communities celebrate a day full of autumn leaves, crisp weather, town parades, the aroma of charcoal grills, royalty, and a good football game.
Homecoming is an event that takes place every year at nearly every high school, college, and university. At Slippery Rock University, the homecoming festivities begin with different student activities throughout the week.
There is a concert on Friday. Saturday usually begins with the parade through town.
All the festivities lead up to big football game on Saturday. Head Coach George Mihalik has been involved in homecoming here at the Rock since 1970 when he was quarterback. Although he said each homecoming runs together, he added it's an exceptional week.
"It's a special weekend at Slippery Rock University," the 18 year head coach said. "It's an exciting atmosphere on campus."
"The only weekend that beats it is a home game in the national playoffs," he said.
Sophomore offensive lineman Bron Clouser said that playing on homecoming is a thrilling experience.
"It's definitely a big rush," Clouser said. "Everyone is pumped up for that big game."
Since many students go home on the weekends here at SRU, the homecoming game is something that the players want to be remembered for because most people usually keep their suitcases unpacked until the next weekend.
"It's one of the biggest games of the year crowd-wise," Clouser said. "We don't want to lose since everyone is coming back for all the festivities."
Mihalik said, "I like this weekend as an alumnus, former player, and as a coach.
Sophomore SRU student Jamie Maraczi enjoys the homecoming festivities and said that a good performance on the football field is important because it is the only game most students will see all year.
