To the Editor:

The Department of Mathematics condemns the ridiculous opinion recently attributed to a member of the department that "Cheating is part of learning." (Cheaters, Sept. 23) The department affirms its strong commitment to the University's policy on cheating: "Academic dishonesty is considered a major violation of the University Code of Conduct. It is out of character and unacceptable in a community of students and scholars."
